NEPAL UPDATE JULY 6, 2015
When Disaster Aid International (DAI) deploys in any country, a special effort is extended in finding the appropriate local partners to work with; having a good local partner can make all the difference when putting forth our best to ensure that the aid DAI provides is truly the solution needed in preserving life in “rebuilding communities”, while keeping in mind the aid DAI provides is distributed in the fairest and most effective way possible.
In Nepal, DAI have been very fortunate to be able to work with Ashok Kumar Shrestha who not only runs his own NGO (Community Development and Relief Agency Nepal ) but who is also an active member of Rotary (Rotary Club of Dhulikhel) as well as the Assistant Governor of RI District 3292.
Not only has Ashok and his team been able to provide DAI’s Disaster Response Team Members (DART’s) with invaluable expertise and knowledge, his contacts and networks have also meant that we have been able to fully coordinate our work with Rotary as a whole and their significant activity throughout Nepal. Ashok has directed a short video, narrated by our own Peter Hazell (who was a member of our first team deployed in Nepal), which outlines the impact of the Earthquake and the response from Rotary, it is worth watching.
Disaster Aid International contributed to these activities by providing both volunteers and the following materials which were distributed in the Kavre, Sindhupalchowk and Dolakha districts:
- 300 bundles of corrugated sheets- resulting in 150 transitional homes
- 50 locally produced ceramic water filters
- 180 DAI tents, a further 22 DAI tents were provided to those affected by the Taplejung landslide
DAI’s work in Nepal continues. The impact of the earthquake was so large that, after 2 months the aid DAI provides, together with our Rotary partners continues saving lives and “rebuilding communities”. The start of the monsoon is expected to not only exacerbate the need for waterproof shelter but also to cause more localized damage on landmasses that have already been destabilized by the earthquake.
