Disaster Aid UK & Ireland are appealing to fellow Rotarians to help with the aftermath of Typhoon Sendong. A newspaper cutting from 19 December is attached for more information.
Typhoon Sendong hit the Philippines the week before Christmas causing a torrent of mud and water to flood from the uplands to the coastal regions. According to a recent National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) report, as at 2.00pm on 27 December, the death toll nationwide arising from this typhoon in Northern Mindanao was 1,249 with 84 missing; 4,594 injured; 12,805 houses totally damaged and 29,520 partially damaged.
Disaster Aid International deployed its Disaster Aid Response Team (DART) to the area on New Year’s Eve to gather intelligence and assess needs.
Disaster Aid International has already entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with the Balay Mindanaw Foundation Inc (BMFI) to assist in the provision of aid to those in most need. The BMFI is recognised for its peace-building and development work and its principled partnerships with other NGO’s, government and business (www.balaymindanaw.org).
